Lutein And Healthy Eyes

Lutein is naturally found in healthy eyes. We need to incorporate it into our diet, whether by supplements and/or food, since lutein is not produced in our bodies.

Great sources of lutein are green peas, honeydew melons, kiwi fruit, broccoli, green lettuces, kale, spinach, leafygreens, collard greens and egg yolks. This will help promote and maintain good vision. Studies are showing that lutein is becoming very beneficial to long term eye health.

Lutein also acts as an antioxidant, by protecting cells from harmful free radicals. It may even help prevent cataracts, which is very prevalent in the elderly and it can lead to blindness. Lutein is part of the carotenoid family which includes beta caratene.

It is like a natural eye protector in that it acts as a filter for the central area of the retina. Macular degeneration is thought to be brought on by too much exposure to light. So when your out and about on a bright sunny day, put your shades on…..your eyes will thank you!
