Attention Deficit Disorder positive characteristics result from a sort of ‘unusual wiring’ found in our brains. At least, this is the way I prefer to simplify it. The human brain is an amazingly complex machine with so many billions of connections and complicated chemicals that are all required to work in harmony, it is no wonder that there are variations in the way everything can hook up and work. I have attention deficit disorder, and In my (intentionally) simplified view of the world, the connections in our ADD brains are just a little bit different than the way things work in ‘the majority’ of people. We should not consider this to be a bad thing, or for us to be somehow less than others simply because we have attention deficit disorder.
In fact, those of us with ADD share a number of positive characteristics that help define us as unusually bright or creative. Let’s take a look…
We see the big picture easily. This allows us to collapse the many smaller, detailed, pieces of information so that the larger theme or issue is readily apparant to us. This big picture view allows us to see the end result of what we want to achieve and assist us in making corrections on our way to end goals. I belive that this empowers us to make positive contributions in a creative process.
We are very aware of the relationships and connections of things within the big picture. Also, we are (very) able to ignore details and focus on the function of the relationships. This allows us to easily identify the important connections. This ability to see how things relate and what the relationship means, rather than focusing the specific details themselves, provides us the ability to intuitively reason our way through complex issues even when we don’t have all of the specific information about each of the smaller pieces. This, to me, is an outstanding example of attention deficit disorder and positive characteristics.
We are infused with energy. Our minds are lightning quick. We are creative and tend to seek challenges and make connections quickly. Our general high speed needs expression, and we are often times very expressive people.
We learn best by doing rather than by watching or listening. We also like to demonstrate knowledge. This allows us to be good leaders, and good teachers.
We are very sensitive to our environment and emotions. We are keenly aware of sights, sounds, and smells. Interestingly, we may tend to categorize our knowledge according to our senses. We are also very empathetic to others, and attune to natural cycles of nature.
This lists presents just some attention deficit disorder positive characteristics. There are more things to add (and I will once I can verbalize them). One of the more interesting positive characteristics of ADD is that all of these attributes combine to provide us with accurate instincts. Our creative minds reason quickly through complicated issues, and we can quickly develop reasonable solutions to problems if we simply follow our ‘gut reactions’ and don’t over analyze things.
Having Attention Deficit Disorder does not need to negatively define you as a person. In fact, just the opposite is true. My hope is for you to understand that our ADD brains work in a different, and I believe, more creative way. And, I hope, we can work against the negative stereotype of attention deficit disorder.
