Research to find drugs continue to be done to overcome alcohol addiction. Experts in the United States recently claimed that a new type of drug known to inhibit the stress response in the brain which is also useful to help patient to overcome their addiction by pressing the stress of their desire (craving) of drinking alcohol.
In the market today there is one available drug called Revia which is used to treat alcohol addiction by reducing the body’s ability to enjoy intoxicating effects.
But the new drug, called LY686017 was working with different mechanisms, Its reducing the addiction to alleviate the effects of stressful situations that may encourage more action in drinking alcohol.
According to Markus Heilig, clinical director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), who led the study, stress behaviors are important factors that cause the phenomenon of the vicious circle of alcoholism.
Heilig and his team studied the impact of similar receptors in the brain called the Neurokinin 1 Receptor (NK1R) that affect responses to stress that related to behavior. This medicine actually has shown its ability to reduce anxiety, but has not been marketed because the results are inconsistent.
In this study, first Heilig and his team investigate the effectiveness of this drug in rats, before they give it to 50 alcoholic patients who suffer anxiety problems and has been undergoing detoxification. During his research, dozens of these patients treated in the clinic for four weeks.
Among the patients, half given a placebo while others provided the original drug. The strong desire (craving) looks down on all patients treated at the clinic and looked at least the majority of patients until the end of the study period.
Patients whom given this new drug, their improvement appeared more clearly after a measurement through questionnaires, medical examinations, tests that are done when facing with situations of social stress, or even when asked to touch or smell alcohol.
